Maritime shipping companies regularly deal with the complexities of voyage planning due to unpredictable weather conditions. Limited access to accurate weather data can result in inefficient routes, increased fuel consumption, and potential safety hazards.

StormGeo steps in to alleviate these challenges by offering advanced weather forecasting and voyage optimization solutions. These technologies empower shipping companies to enhance safety, maximize commercial returns, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Challenge: Streamlining Voyage Planning

In 2020, Singapore-based Womar Tanker Pools began using StormGeo’s BonVoyage System (BVS), an onboard weather and voyage optimization tool providing comprehensive weather forecasts from the start to the end of each voyage.

To better align the crew’s interpretations with detailed voyage plans, particularly during complex ocean crossings, a close collaboration between StormGeo’s Operations Department and the crew became essential. This collaboration ensures safe and efficient voyages, based on the most recent weather data. “The expertise and recommendations from the Operations Department have been crucial in guiding our crew. They help us navigate safely and adjust our routes effectively in response to changing conditions,” says Jonathan Sim, Vessel Operator at Womar.

Solution: Collaboration Through BVS Track Sharing

The implementation of BVS track sharing between Womar’s vessels and StormGeo's route analysts  significantly improved communication and clarity in voyage planning. By providing real-time insights into the routes suggested by StormGeo’s weather optimization system, this collaboration enabled the crew to better understand and follow the most efficient and safe paths based on both forecasted and current weather conditions.

Additionally, StormGeo’s Singapore customer service team played a pivotal role in the initial setup by providing detailed installation instructions, software, and training resources. Their prompt responses to troubleshooting requests ensured that Womar’s vessels were fully equipped to use BVS, leading to smoother operations and a more efficient planning process.

“StormGeo’s support and the ability to share BVS tracks have greatly improved our capacity to plan and execute safe, efficient voyages,” adds Sim.

Implementing StormGeo’s Voyage Optimization Solution

The implementation process involved equipping all Womar vessels with BVS, allowing them to receive the latest weather data and calculate alternative route suggestions. This integration enabled more advanced planning and customized routing based on current and forecasted weather conditions. "StormGeo's Singapore customer service team expertly handled the BVS installation on the vessels, providing detailed setup instructions, software, and training resources. Their quick response to troubleshooting requests ensured efficient support and smooth operations for the Masters," says Eugene Koukouvagias, StormGeo’s Senior Technical CST Manager.

Implementation Steps:

1.Equipping Vessels: All Womar vessels were equipped with BVS.

2.Training: Crew members were trained to utilize the system effectively.

3.Customization: Routes were customized based on real-time weather data and vessel requirements.

4.Transition Plan: Plans were made to transition to s-Planner, StormGeo’s next-generation voyage optimization tool, in ensuring it exceeds BVS capabilities.

“Having the latest technology onboard ensures that the vessel can plan the optimal voyages, and with the added capability to be fully compliant with publications and charts,” says Rolf Reksten, VP Route Advisory Services at StormGeo.

“Leveraging our advanced voyage optimization solutions significantly enhances operational efficiency. Our data-driven approach ensures precise route planning and timely adjustments, optimizing safety and performance for every journey,” he adds.

Results and Impact: Enhanced Efficiency and Safety

Since implemention, Womar has seen significant improvements:

  • Advanced Planning: Vessels can plan voyages more effectively, considering detailed weather forecasts.
  • Increased Efficiency: Better bunker planning and the ability to load more cargo for ocean crossings.
  • Safety: Constant advisories and alternative route options help avoid unfavorable weather, enhancing safety.
  • Coverage: As of 2024 alone, 27 vessels have been successfully routed, with potential to route all 49 vessels depending on trading routes.

“Given the worsening weather conditions south of Cape Town, we chose to follow the Operations Department's expert recommendation for Alternate Route 1. Their guidance to avoid passing 18E and to stay west with reduced speed was crucial for our safety. Their recommendations are always appreciated for their effectiveness in ensuring safe navigation,” says Captain Juanito D. Atienza Jr., Master, M.T. Jal Siddhi.

The integration of StormGeo’s service has been transformational for Womar, enabling them to navigate the complexities of maritime voyage planning with greater precision and confidence. The advanced weather forecasting and real-time route optimization have not only improved operational efficiency but also significantly enhanced safety.

This partnership highlights the critical role of innovative technology in overcoming the challenges of unpredictable weather, ensuring smoother and more reliable ocean crossings for Womar’s fleet.
